The evacuation of one thousand Indians from the Indian Ocean island of Maldives will commence on May 8th as two naval vessels INS Jalashwa and INS Magar have reached the island.

The evacuated personnel will reach Kochi and then handed over to agencies of various states, said the navy. The navy said operation is being carried out with the cooperation of various central ministries and state governments.
