There is no impact of the Oil spill from the Chennai
Petroleum Corporation’s refinery in the aftermath of last week’s cyclone in Bay
of Bengal according to an official release based on the assessment the
coastguards
No oil spill was found extending into sea
thereafter as the flood water outflow into the sea through Kosathalaiyar river
was less and the oil got trapped inside the creek area which are being
responded by the contractors.
Coast Guard has been providing necessary expert advise to
Chennai Petroleum Corporation and Tamil Nadu Pollution control board for
necessary assessment, cleaning and recovery of spilt oil from the Ennore creek
area.
ICG ships and helicopters have been continuously
monitoring the situation and it is confirmed that there is nil egress of oil
slick into the coastal area.
Oil spill mixed with drain/flood waters were observed in
Ernavur, Chennai area which made its way till Ennore creek and Buckingham canal
in the aftermath of cyclone Michaung.
Traces of Oil were also seen in the coastal waters close
to Kosathalaiyar river mouth on December 10th. The extent of oil spill was spread to 20 Sq km area which was light
sheen to dark brown in color and was estimated to be approximately 10 tons as
per standard method of Spill quantity calculation.
The spill in the coastal waters was immediately responded
by Coast Guard ships and helicopters on December 10 appropriately neutralized.
