Chennai city to have 3 bus terminals to tackle traffic issues of the city

Chennai city will be decongested soon with three bus terminals coming up in various parts of the city for catering to buses operating within the state and to neighboring states.

A bus terminal has already come up at Madhavaram to cater to the requirements of buses operating to North Tamil Nadu destinations as well as Andhra Pradesh. The next terminal at Kilambakkam for south bound buses will be commissioned early 2024.

The under-construction ‘Bus Terminus’ in Kilambakkam will be inaugurated early next year, said Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) Minister P K SekarBabu.

Babu inspected the progress of the bus terminus project which is being built over 86 acres at a cost of Rs 400 crore.

Addressing the media, Babu said the terminus should have been inaugurated a couple of months ago but has been delayed owing to repeated instances of water-logging during the monsoon season.

Government has sanctioned 1,700 meters of storm water drains (SWD) to prevent water-logging and has completed about 1,200 meters of the network during the last two and half months.Once inaugurated, the terminus would be able to serve over 2,300 buses and more than one lakh passengers daily. Further, it has several passenger amenities including a sitting lobby, hotels, shops, restrooms, as well as a police station.

Another terminal is coming up in West Chennai for buses going to western districts and Kerala. Entire bus operations which originated from Koyambedu terminal have now been decentralized to tackle the traffic issues in Chennai Metropolis.
