With this latest
delivery, the US port has acquired a
total of 26 new RTGs since December 2023, which have been deployed across
its Barbours Cut and Bayport Container Terminals. This delivery is the fourth
of five scheduled for this year.
The acquisition of
these hybrid-electric RTGs is a step toward Port Houston’s goal of achieving
carbon neutrality by 2050. Unlike conventional diesel-powered cranes, these
hybrid models significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution,
and fuel consumption.
According to a
statement, they cut NOx, PM, HC, and CO emissions by 90% compared to diesel
models. By incorporating advanced hybrid technology, these RTG cranes combine the operational efficiency and versatility of
battery power with the reliable performance of diesel, all while substantially
lowering their environmental impact.
"We are excited
to add these hybrid-electric RTGs to our fleet. This investment demonstrates
our commitment to sustainable growth and our leadership in the maritime
industry’s shift toward greener equipment," stated Roger Guenther,
executive director at Port Houston.
An additional batch of RTGs is expected to arrive
by the fourth quarter of this year. By the end of 2024, 57 of their 147 RTG
cranes across both container terminals will be hybrid-electric. "As we integrate advanced technology into
our operations alongside our dedicated staff, stevedores, and ILA labour, we
are not only improving efficiency but also contributing to a healthier
environment for our community," added Roger Guenther.
