APM Terminals Suape acquires all-electric container handlers from SANY

Specifically tailored for the new terminal, this equipment showcases cutting-edge technology designed to deliver superior efficiency and safety standards.

Furthermore, this investment marks APM Terminals' latest initiative in advancing the adoption of electric container handling solutions, reinforcing its commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2040.

"APM Terminals Suape is investing more than US$47 million in modern equipment to consolidate our project in Pernambuco, which will be the first 100% electric terminal in Latin America. This is yet another step that reinforces APM Terminals' commitment to leading the modernization of the port sector in Brazil," commented Aristides Russi Júnior, managing director of APM Terminals Suape.

Located in the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Port Industrial Complex (Suape), Pernambuco, the new terminal has been under construction since February and is scheduled to commence operations in the latter half of 2026.

Moreover, the purchase includes two state-of-the-art remote-controlled ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, known for their exceptional size and modern capabilities. These cranes feature advanced systems for initial positioning, enhancing operational safety and productivity. They are also equipped with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, ensuring reliable container loading and unloading, and precision-enhancing features to prevent equipment damage and protect transported cargo.

Additionally, seven remote-controlled rubber-treated gantry (RTG) cranes were procured, equipped with similar safety enhancements as the STS cranes. Remote operation capabilities, where operators control operations from a central room rather than from the crane's cabin, further boost productivity and safety. These RTGs incorporate collision avoidance systems to minimize accidents involving other equipment, vehicles, and personnel, along with safeguards to prevent lifting trucks that still have containers locked to them.

Further complementing the fleet are two new electric reach stackers—the first of their kind in Brazil—and two electric empty container forklifts. The acquisition also includes a 16-tonne forklift and fourteen terminal tractors, all electric-powered. In addition to creating direct and indirect employment opportunities, the new terminal is poised to drive socio-economic growth in the region, offering enhanced connectivity and expanded berthing capabilities for shipping firms. APM Terminals Suape will feature its own dedicated 5G network, ensuring secure real-time data transmission to customers worldwide, round the clock.
