INS Triput Launch Ceremony

In a significant milestone achievement, Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), a premier Indian DPSU Shipyard, successfully launched the first indigenous P1135.6 Frigate on 23 Jul 24. The Vessel is first of the 02 Frigates of P 1135.6 Class being constructed at GSL. It is the first time that these vessels are being constructed indigenously and with the launch of this mighty Frigate, Indian Navy and GSL continue its triumphant march towards self-reliance, turning ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat ‘ a reality. A strategic move of adding one more Defence Shipyard to the league of Yards that can built weapon intensive platforms is becoming a reality.

The ship was launched by Adv. (Smt.) Rita Sreedharan, in presence of Shri. P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, Hon’ble Governor of Goa, the Chief Guest for the occasion. The launching ceremony was attended by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Vice Chief of Naval Staff and Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Chairman and Managing Director, GSL along with officials from the Ministry of Defence, Senior Flag Officials of Indian Navy and employees of GSL.

Since plate cutting ceremony of the ship on 20 Sep 20 and keel laying on 29 Jan 21, the Shipyard has made exceptional strides in achieving this milestone of launching. This import substitute is a hallmark of indigenization incorporating multiple complex and advanced indigenous technology and systems. The hull of these Class of vessels is being made from indigenous steel, which is a specialised low carbon micro alloy grade steel.

The construction of these ships is based on Indian navy’s Specific requirements to meet the entire spectrum of Naval Warfare in all three dimensions. The 124m long and 15.5m wide ship is propelled by four Gas Turbines which are designed to achieve a maximum speed of 28 Knots at a displacement of approx 3200 tons. The ship is being fitted with a potent combination of state-of-art Weapons and Sensors, an Integrated Platform and Bridge Management System and a host of other advanced features. The ship’s air defence capability, designed to counter enemy aircraft and anti-ship cruise missile will revolve around vertical launch long range Surface to Air missile system. Further, the ship has been fitted with indigenous power generation and distribution system, AC, Steering System and Stabilisers designed and developed by private industry.

This Project contributes to the prosperity of the Nation by developing the local ecosystem and supporting workforce / entrepreneurs / MSMEs. The project is likely to generate substantial employment for local industry and MSMEs engaged on production activities at various factories and within Goa Shipyard Limited.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Hon’ble Governor of Goa appreciated the efforts put in by MoD, Indian Navy and industry in ensuring that all ship building requirements of Indian Navy are fulfilled indigenously. Further, congratulating employees of GSL on achieving this critical milestone overcoming all odds, he exhorted all present to ensure that the march towards ‘Atmanirbharta’ in Defence Production is pursued in the right earnest to meet the targets.

The launch of Triput is an exemplary testimony of our nation’s Warship building capability and propels Goa Shipyard Limited into the league of Indian Shipyards capable of producing state-of-art Frigates for Indian Navy.
