This landmark project, set to be operational by next year, aligns
with the Indian government’s semiconductor mission and is poised to transform
Assam into a key player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
The facility, located in Jagiroad, Assam, will package 15 billion semiconductor
chips per year. These chips will be
used in various high-tech products, including electric vehicles, healthcare
devices, mobile phones, and laptops.The
BhoomiPujan ceremony marks the commencement of India’s first indigenous
semiconductor assembly and testing facility. The factory is expected to
partially commence operations by 2025.
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran highlighted
the group’s comprehensive strategy, which includes establishing manufacturing
capabilities in Tamil Nadu, packaging facilities in Karnataka, an advanced chip
manufacturing plant in Gujarat, and now, the assembly and test facility in
Assam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation
for the Gujarat and Assam facilities via a virtual ceremony earlier this year.
The project is
anticipated to create over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. The
Tata Group is already training 1,000 local Assamese individuals in various
facilities across India.
Assam Chief Minister HimantaBiswaSarma assured that the state government and its people are fully
supportive of the project, emphasizing the unique opportunity and significant
benefits it brings to Assam.
The facility will
enable direct shipping of semiconductor chips to global end-users and OEMs,
reinforcing India’s position in the semiconductor value chain.
