PPA plants 12.3 million trees in greening initiatives

THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has made significant strides in its reforestation efforts, planting over 12 million trees and mangroves nationwide since 2020. This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s call for integrating reforestation into disaster mitigation projects says the media.

PPA's Port Management Offices (PMOs) have been instrumental in achieving this milestone, with Surigao leading the pack by planting nearly 4.9 million trees.

Other top-performing PMOs include Socsargen, Agusan, Zamboanga delNorte, and Masbate.

To ensure continuous environmental stewardship, PPA has mandated tree planting for all contracts, accreditations, and permits. This policy, anchored on Executive Order 26 and Republic Act 9729, requires applicants and grantees to plant at least 1,000 trees or mangroves before obtaining PPA clearances.

PPA General Manager Jay Santiago emphasized the agency's commitment to combating climate change and protecting the environment. He stressed the importance of intensifying reforestation efforts in response to the President's call and the increasing frequency of natural disasters.

In partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, PPA has planted 3,000 mangroves in various provinces setting up a good precedent.
