PD Ports invests US$1.3 million in new bulk tipper trucks

The STAS Agrostar bulk tipper trailers, specifically designed for handling complex materials like grain and powder, were delivered this summer along with five Volvo trucks. This investment underscores PD Ports' dedication to port-centric logistics, offering comprehensive, end-to-end services for all customers at Tees Dock. An additional 10 drivers have been hired to support the new equipment, while the existing transport team has undergone further training.

Furthermore, the STAS trailers are equipped with advanced safety features, including an automatic tailgate that can be controlled from inside the cab. The tailgate’s double-hinge suspension allows for higher clearance during unloading to prevent damage.

Each trailer is built with a wear-resistant floor and fitted with underbody vibrators to ensure that the product doesn’t get stuck. They also include a PM1155 weighing system, which can remotely weigh loads with precision within 10kg.

Moreover, this new fleet is part of a broader investment in Tees Dock’s bulk-handling capabilities, following a US$11 million upgrade that included two 140-tonne rail-mounted Liebherr electric-hydraulic mobile harbour cranes, self-propelled hoppers, and additional load shovels. These improvements have led to faster vessel discharges and greater efficiency for customers.

"Bulk products are a huge part of our business at Tees Dock but until now we haven’t had an in-house transport service for free-flowing powder or grain. We’ve worked hard to build a strong relationship between our team in transport and the team in bulks so that we can offer customers the option of a service that sees us handle their product from quay to the end destination, making it more efficient and cost-effective," stated Chris Poole, PD Ports transport manager (bulks), who has joined the company to run the new service with 20 years’ experience in the haulage industry.

In line with the new fleet, PD Ports has also achieved TASCC (Trade Assurance Scheme for Combinable Crops) accreditation. All drivers have undergone product-specific and TASCC training to ensure compliance with food and feed safety standards, enhancing confidence throughout the supply chain.

"By achieving TASCC accreditation and training all drivers in the details of each product, we can be sure to provide the best service and maintain the highest standards," added Chris Poole.
