The port revealed that loaded container capacity
increased in August 2024 by 5.4 per cent compared to August 2023. Loaded
imports increased 14.9 per cent in August 2024, reaching 83,272 TEU from 72,481
TEU in August 2023. Loaded exports fell 5.5 per cent, the port handled 59,362
TEU in August 2024, compared to 62,785 TEU in August 2023.
According to the port, the decline in
export volume can be linked to a more conventional summer season in Northern
California. As harvested crops enter the market, exports are expected to
increase significantly.
The port noted that this is the first year in which
export volume has increased since 2019. Overall, 2024 export volume is up
year-on-year (YoY).
Port of Oakland Maritime Director, Bryan Brandes,
said: “We are preparing for a strong fourth quarter. All indicators point to
strong import volumes fueled by consumer spending during the upcoming holiday
season.”
Empty imports fell 11.3 per cent, with 11,823 TEU
passing through Port facilities in August 2024, compared to 13,329 TEU in
August 2023.
Empty exports increased by 25.9 per cent, with 38,507
TEU leaving port facilities in August 2024, compared to 30,579 TEU in August
2023.
