The decision, stemming from a directive
by the government, seeks to address the dual demands of increasing air cargo
capabilities and rising passenger traffic. According
to sources, these airports were chosen from a pool of over 400 facilities, many
of which are currently underperforming.
The airports earmarked for modernization span across
diverse geographical locations, ranging from small towns to emerging economic
hubs. Notable names on the list include
Aizawl, Kota, Muzaffarpur, Satna, Ziro, Jalgaon, Asansol, Malda, Jharsuguda,
Khandwa, Panna, Raxaul, Vellore, Tezu, Agatti, Akola, Belagavi, Cooch-Behar,
Gaya, Gorakhpur, Hubballi, Kolhapur, Kandla, Kullu, Pantnagar, and Rajahmundry.
These upgrades are particularly
significant for areas with untapped aviation potential. By modernizing
infrastructure, the initiative aims to turn these underutilized airports into
critical nodes for regional connectivity and cargo transportation. A key focus of this modernization drive is
to strengthen air cargo capabilities, reflecting the growing importance of air
transport for goods requiring rapid delivery. Pharmaceuticals, textiles,
electronics, and perishable goods will particularly benefit, as the aviation
sector offers a faster alternative amidst challenges in conventional trade
routes and geopolitical uncertainties.
In addition to addressing delays and
risks associated with shipping, the plan aligns with the shift towards air
cargo due to rising insurance premiums and shipping costs. Enhanced cargo
facilities will also help exporters and businesses reduce transit times, ensure
product freshness, and maintain supply chain efficiency. The modernization blueprint will include the extension of runways to
accommodate larger aircraft, the establishment of passenger amenities in
compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, and
the deployment of advanced digital technologies. .
In a bid to streamline cargo operations,
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems will also be introduced. These systems
will enable seamless communication among stakeholders by standardizing the
electronic exchange of business documents, reducing processing times and
ensuring greater operational transparency.
The AAI’s modernization project is not only an
infrastructure upgrade but also a strategic response to emerging challenges in
global trade and the aviation industry.
By optimizing these 150 airports, India aims
to create a robust aviation network that supports economic growth, fosters
regional development, and strengthens its position in global logistics.
