The deluge in
Tuticorin following this week’s record rainfall has led to damage to container
cargo worth Rs four hundred crores.The
exact quantum of damage could be assessed after anSurvey is undertaken after a
few days.
A few thousand
containers are stored in dozens of container freight stations and a Inland
container depots. Some of them were seen floating.The worst affected are the
facilities located on the Harbor Express Road. Besides the heavy rain the
nearby ponds and lakes also got breached compounding the problem.
Power went off for two days in both VOC Port
and its two container terminals crippling the cargo handling operations. The container terminal inside the port is
operating a gen-set but with minimal operations, said sources.
There are 16
CFSs and one ICD in Tuticorin. In addition, there are cargoes stored in the
facilities for exports.
Meanwhile,
Operations at Tuticorin airport and train services to Tirunelveli resumed after
they were suspended for nearly two days due to heavy rain in the two southern
districts.
