Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the
newly-developed terminal building of Tiruchirappalli International Airport in
Tiruchirapalli in central Tamil Nadu. Also, It is the second-busiest airport in the state and was long awaiting a
new, larger, and modern terminal building.
The other airport in the vicinity Madurai and Coimbatore
are still run with 18th century airport infrastructure and not many
international flights. Both are yet to be declared as full fledged
international airports
The new terminal building at Tiruchirapalli airport has
been developed at a cost of more than Rs 1100 crore. The two-level new international terminal has the capacity to serve more
than 44 lakh passengers annually and about 3,500 during peak hours.
"The new terminal hosts state-of-the-art amenities
and features for passenger convenience. But there was no mention during the
course of the inauguration of the terminal as to the additional flights
proposed to be operated from the terminal. Most of the international flights from
Trichirapalli airport, mostly budget airliners are bound either for Gulf
countries or Singapore. The 100 year
airport is yet to graduate to operate flights to either Europe or United States
or even Australia

International Airport is the second-largest airport in terms of international
passenger traffic after Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The new terminal building
contains 60 check-in counters, 5 baggage carousels, 60 arrival immigration
counters, and 44 departure emigration counters.
