In a record of
sorts for the Airport Authority of India, the Rs 500 crore new terminal at Gwalior airport will be completed in 14
months and made available to passengers in the next ten days, Civil aviation
Minister said’
"We aim to make this the fastest
airport to be built in the history of India. The foundation stone of this
airport was laid by the Home Minister on October 16, 2022, and we will try to
have it completely ready by January 31 or the first week of February," the Union Minister said after inspecting
to the progress of work at the project site.
Gwalior is all
set to rise to a global level the minister said indicating that the once sleepy
town will soon become international aviation hub
"Today,
in Gwalior, I reviewed the airport construction with higher officials and
issued necessary guidelines. Gwalior Airport, under construction in two lakh
square feet at a cost of Rs 500 crore, will prove to be a milestone in the
construction of the new Gwalior," he added.
Hundred year
old airports like Coimbatore and Madurai are awaiting the status of an
international airport for decades and Gwalior is expected to jump the queue
with the commissioning of the new terminal.
The Union
minister’s father late MadhavraoScindia shot into fame when as the Union
railway minister in 1980’s developed Gwalior railway station like a modern
airport terminal.
