A Turkish ship pilot has died after falling into
the water during a pilot transfer operation at the Bosphorus Strait.
The accident took place Sunday morning 4 Feb near
the southern entrance of the waterway in Istanbul.
Captain Oguz Kok, the pilot, fell while trying to
board the bulk carrier New Siham. A second pilot immediately dove
in after him and was able to Kok, but he later died from his injuries.
The European Maritime Pilots’ Association issued a
statement that it was deeply saddened by the news and called for “a thorough
and transparent investigation” into the accident.
Captain Kok has been described as an
experienced ship pilot who was dedicated to his profession and positive impact
on the maritime community.
A ceremony for Captain Kok was held on Monday.
