The accident occurred six kilometres southwest of
Yeoseo Island, in Wando County of South Korea.
The Wando Coast Guard was quick in
the rescue mission, and 77 individuals on the two vessels had been rescued in
about four hours. The Wando Coast Guard mentioned that the accident
occurred around 4:20 am, and they promptly dispatched a helicopter and a patrol
vessel to expedite the rescue.
The Coast Guard has also confirmed that though the
vessels were impaired significantly,
neither of them has a possibility of sinking. The LNG carrier, SM JEJU
LNG1, was empty during the collision.
In contrast, the 5900-ton freighter had been loaded
with containers and vehicles when the accident took place, and the Coast Guard
has also confirmed that the freighter was having excess guests at its limit. A more thorough investigation is in
progress to determine the crash’s cause.
