PSA Singapore has unveiled a strategic initiative to expand its Jurong Island Terminal (JIT)
in response to escalating demand for sustainable, efficient, and resilient
supply chain solutions within Jurong Island’s industries.
Situated on Jurong Island’s northwestern seafront, JIT offers twice-daily barge services
linking beneficial cargo owners (BCOs) on Jurong Island with PSA’s primary hubs
at Tuas, Pasir Panjang, and Brani. This connectivity enables BCOs to
capitalize on Singapore’s extensive network for unparalleled access to global
markets.
“The collaboration between PSA and JTC
to expand JIT ensures that current and future enterprises in Singapore’s Energy
and Chemicals sector will continue to reap these benefits in the years ahead,
and do so in more sustainable ways,” stated
Nelson Quek, Regional
CEO of Southeast Asia at PSA International.
In addition, Jurong Island serves as the core of
Singapore’s Energy and Chemicals sector, overseen by JTC. Spanning 30,000,000
square meters, it accommodates over 100 global companies engaged in refining,
olefins production, and chemical manufacturing.
While containerized goods can be transported to and
from Jurong Island via road, barging presents a less labour-intensive,
congestion-free alternative that produces approximately 30% fewer carbon
emissions.
The demand for barging has steadily risen in recent
years, evidenced by JIT’s volume growth of 13% in 2023, reaching a
record-breaking 149,000 TEUs.
In collaboration with JTC, PSA plans to expand JIT,
increasing its annual handling capacity to 300,000 TEUs to meet projected
demand. The expansion will also entail the development of new facilities for
handling Dangerous Goods (DG) and cargo trans-loading, complementing PSA’s
expanding array of physical and digital solutions aimed at enhancing BCOs’
inventory and supply chain management efficiency.
Also,
scheduled for completion by 2025, the JIT expansion aligns with Jurong Island’s
transition into a sustainable Energy and Chemicals park, aligning with the objectives of the Singapore Green
Plan 2030. A commemorative event was held at PSA’s corporate office, PSA
Horizons, attended by key stakeholders and partners.
“Barging volumes on Jurong Island are
set to rise with increasing demand for sustainable logistics. JIT’s expansion is poised to meet this
growth and collaboration with partners like PSA is key in our journey to make
Jurong Island a sustainable Energy and Chemicals park,” said Alvin Tan, ACEO, JTC.
