Tata
Steel has started to wind down operations at Port Talbot in the UK amid an
advanced stage of negotiations with the trade unions about the closure of blast
furnace operations and job loss.
The
company said it has decided to cease operations of the coke ovens at the Port
Talbot plant in Wales, citing a deterioration of operational stability.
The
proposed restructuring exercise will cost 2,800 jobs in the UK, including 2,500
by the middle of 2025. The trade unions
have opposed the proposal and demanded that the Tatas continue with one blast
furnace.
