AMET University achieved a significant milestone on Gandhi Jayanthi, successfully concluding its Eye Donation Pledge Campaign by collecting 9,000 pledges in just one day. Held at Shri Janakiraman Auditorium, this event underscored the university's commitment to social responsibility and community engagement.
Inspiring Community Outreach: For the past three weeks, over 4,000 students and 500 faculty and staff participated in a door-to-door campaign, engaging with local communities, streets, and commercial areas. They shared crucial information on eye donation and corneal blindness, emphasizing how one eye donation could restore sight for two individuals.
Inspiring Addresses at the Valedictory Function; The valedictory function featured a powerful Presidential Address by Dr. J. Ramachandran, Founder and Chancellor of AMET University, who emphasized the importance of social responsibility and community engagement. Dr. Rajesh Ramachandran, Pro Chancellor, delivered a heartfelt Felicitation Address, expressing gratitude to all participants and highlighting the campaign's significant contribution to eye health awareness.
Col. Dr. G. Thiruvasagam, Pro Chancellor (Academics) and Project Head of the campaign, provided an in-depth briefing, explaining the campaign’s objectives and its collaboration with the National Health Mission. He noted the technical support in collecting donor details, leading to e-certificates being issued to each donor by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Honoring Efforts and Recognition: Prof. Chandra Kumar, Project Director of the Tamil Nadu State Blindness Control Society, graced the event as Chief Guest. He commended AMET University’s outreach efforts and accepted the details of 9,000 pledges on behalf of the Government, symbolizing its commitment to the initiative. He also distributed Certificates of Appreciation to donors, acknowledging their life-changing contributions. Prof. Chandra Kumar shared vital statistics on corneal blindness in India and Tamil Nadu, illustrating how these pledges would significantly impact the mission of the Tamil Nadu State Blindness Control Society.
A Unified Effort for a Noble Cause: The campaign was organized in collaboration with the National Health Mission, Tamil Nadu, providing essential technical support for donor data collection and validation. Each donor will receive an e-certificate from the Government. The event was convened by Prof. Dr. V. Rajendran, Vice Chancellor, and coordinated by Dr. Deepa Rajesh, Vice President (Academics), and Capt. Gopal Srinivas, Principal (Maritime Studies), with administrative support from Dr. R. Muthezhilan, Registrar, and Dr. Sangeetha Albin, Additional Registrar. Special Officer Dr. M. Jayaprakashvel and Dr. N. R. Ramkumar, Dean Student Welfare, coordinated the student and faculty campaigns.
A Legacy of Community Engagement: This campaign adds to AMET University’s history of impactful initiatives, including the sale of Khadi and Handloom products worth ₹1.14 crore in 2022 (One Day One Crore) and the donation of 1 lakh used books to underprivileged schools in 2023 (One Day One Lakh). These efforts reflect AMET’s dedication to holistic education while serving society.
