The delay has been
caused by prolonged rainfall in South Africa, affecting the flowering and
harvesting schedule. The first
consignment, consisting of 945 boxes, has been distributed across key Indian
cities including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Rajkot. These mangoes, grown from
Alphonso grafts introduced from Ratnagiri approximately 14 years ago, have been
part of India's import list since 2018, according to importer Sanjay Pansare.
Despite a smaller crop size this season, shipments
are expected to increase with an estimated 7,000 boxes to be dispatched weekly.
To ensure quality, the Malawi mangoes are subjected to hot water treatment,
preserving their Alphonso-like taste and making them a favorable choice during
their off-season.
Additionally, 275
boxes of Tommy Atkin mangoes from South Africa have been imported, diversifying
the offerings. The demand for these premium mangoes is on the rise,
particularly as luxury gifts during the wedding season, with availability anticipated
to last until late December.
