CMA CGM’s LNG-powered vessel arrives in India, marking a milestone in sustainable shipping

CMA CGM’s LNG-powered vessel Fort Diamant made its maiden call at Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal on 16th December. The arrival of the vessel at Nhava Sheva is a significant stride for CMA CGM towards sustainable shipping and efficient maritime transport solutions.

The 7,300 TEU-capacity Fort Diamant is the third vessel in a series of four LNG-powered ships equipped with approximately 1,400 reefer plugs, showcasing the Group’s commitment to eco-friendly shipping. The vessel operates on the Asia Subcontinent (AS1) service, which connects key ports in Asia and India, including Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Singapore, Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Karachi. The AS1 service supports India’s booming Asia trade, which constitutes 44% of the country’s total imports.

Atit Mahajan, Managing Director of CMA CGM Agency India, speaking on the occasion of the vessel’s arrival said, “This vessel not only demonstrates our Group’s commitment to offering sustainable shipping and logistics solutions but also enhances our ability to serve customers with greater efficiency and reliability.”

The Group has committed $18 billion towards building a greener fleet, ordering 131 LNG and methanol-powered vessels by 2028. These vessels are designed to run on low-carbon energies such as biogas, bio methanol and synthetic fuels.

CMA CGM, in collaboration with J M Baxi Ports & Logistics, operates NSFT and also runs the CT4 terminal in Mundra in partnership with Adani Ports & SEZ. The arrival of CMA CGM Fort Diamant highlights NSFT’s readiness to handle next-generation vessels and reflects strengthened collaboration between ports and shipping lines to advance green shipping initiatives.

Anirudhha Lele, CEO of NSFT, said, “The vessel’s arrival underscores the port’s capability to handle advanced ships and aligns with our shared commitment to reducing marine pollution and GHG emissions.”
