Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders starts production of Fast Patrol Vessel for Indian Coast Guard

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) has commenced production on the first Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) for the Indian Coast Guard under a 14-vessel project. Concurrently, the company has initiated plate cutting for the second ship of the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs).

The plate-cutting ceremony for the inaugural FPV marks the beginning of construction for this high-speed fleet. Biju George, Director of Shipbuilding at MDL, led the event with senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard in attendance.

MDL’s contract with the Coast Guard, valued at ₹1,070.47 crore, includes the design, construction, and delivery of 14 FPVs. These vessels will feature advanced waterjet propulsion systems, exceeding speeds of 33 knots, and will be classified under Dual Class (ABS & IRS). Designed for coastal patrol and fishery protection, they will also include a high-speed boat for search and rescue in shallow waters and have capabilities for wartime roles such as convoy escort, medical evacuation, and logistics support.

In addition to the FPV project, MDL has a ₹1,614.89 crore contract with the Coast Guard for six NGOPVs. The plate cutting for the second NGOPV marks a significant milestone, following the first plate cutting on May 31. These vessels, equipped with twin controllable pitch propellers and 9,000 kW engines, will achieve speeds over 23 knots and be classified under Dual Class (ABS & IRS).

The NGOPVs are designed for coastal and offshore patrolling, fisheries protection, anti-piracy efforts, search and rescue operations, and ocean surveillance. They will play a vital role in monitoring India’s maritime zones and sea lines of communication (SLOCs). The first FPV is slated for delivery by March 2026, while the first and second NGOPVs are scheduled for July 2027 and December 2027, respectively. These projects underscore MDL’s contribution to enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard.
