A five-month-old gorilla,
rescued from the cargo hold of a Turkish Airlines flight, is now recovering at
Polonezkoy Zoo in Istanbul, where he has been named Zeytin (olive)
following a public naming competition. The young gorilla was discovered last month in a
box aboard a flight from Nigeria to Thailand during its transit through
Istanbul. Wildlife officers intervened
and transferred Zeytin to the zoo, where he has been under specialized care.
When Zeytin first arrived, he weighed just 9 kilograms and
measured 62 centimeters in length. After weeks of rehabilitation, his health
has improved significantly, with his weight now reaching 10.4 kilograms and his
length increasing to 65.5 centimeters.
Istanbul Nature Conservation
authorities have confirmed they are in discussions with international
organizations, including the CITES Secretariat and relevant countries, to
determine the best course of action for the gorilla’s future. Options include returning
Zeytin
to his natural habitat or relocating him to a conservation facility.
This rescue highlights
ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife trafficking, a persistent issue in
global trade routes. The case has drawn attention to the plight of endangered species and
the need for stronger enforcement of international regulations.
