Historic MOU of NUSI with DG

The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) have forged a ground breaking partnership to improve the well-being of seafarers by integrating yoga into their daily routines. The benefits of incorporating yoga into daily life include building resilience, reducing anxiety, improving overall quality of life, managing stress, improving physical fitness, enhancing mental well-being.

The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed today at a ceremony in Mumbai.

The initiative represents a significant advancement in addressing challenges that seafarers face, such as isolation, confined spaces, and unpredictable routines, which can lead to mental and physical health issues.  Under the agreement, a specialized network of yoga instructors and psychologists will be established across maritime training institutes nationwide, delivering an advanced wellness curriculum to both seafarer trainees and experienced maritime professionals.

Director General of Shipping, Shri Shyam Jaganathan, who signed the MoU alongside NUSI's General Secretary-cum-Treasurer Shri Milind Kandalgaonkar, emphasized the significance of the partnership: "This collaboration represents our unwavering commitment to creating a more supportive and healthier maritime environment. The wellbeing of our seafarers is not just a priority—it's fundamental to the future of our maritime industry."

Speaking at the event, NUSI General Secretary-cum-Treasurer Shri Milind Kandalgaonkar highlighted the initiative's timeliness: "Today's seafarers face unprecedented pressures during extended voyages. This program addresses a critical need in our industry by providing comprehensive support for both mental and physical wellbeing."

NUSI has embarked upon initiatives to deal with mental health and wellbeing issues of seafarers including the pioneering “NUSI Sahara” which was started in 2017. The initiative is for all ranks of Indian seafarers’ pre-sea / post-sea and on board the ships and their families pan-India.

The Directorate General of Shipping will provide all necessary assistance, guidance, logistics, etc. including collaboration with experts to facilitate the successful implementation of the flagship program “Sagar Mein Yog- Complete Wellness at Sea”.

The signing ceremony was attended by key stakeholders from across the maritime industry, demonstrating the broad support for this initiative. Their presence reinforces the collaborative approach being taken to address the specific challenges faced by Indian seafarers.

Key Features of the Initiative:

- Implementation of standardized wellness programs across maritime training institutes

- Integration of yoga and psychological support services

- Development of specialized curriculum for maritime professionals

- Establishment of a support network for active seafarers

The partnership sets new benchmarks for seafarer welfare initiatives globally and positions India as a leader in addressing maritime workforce wellness. As the program rolls out across training institutes, it aims to create a more resilient and healthier maritime workforce, better equipped to meet the demands of modern seafaring.
