The Kerala State Road
Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has rolled out rechargeable travel cards as part
of its ongoing digital revamp. The initiative, launched in partnership with the
Chalo App, aims to offer a cashless and paperless travel experience. The smart card is currently being distributed in Thiruvananthapuram and
Kollam districts. The rollout is supported by new Android-based Smart
Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs), already in use at the respective depots. Other depots, such as Vaikom, will follow
in phases as more machines are supplied and personnel are trained.
Fares are debited through a simple swipe on the ETMs, which use Radio Frequency
Identification Device (RFID) technology. The card helps address issues like
change shortage and is usable immediately on equipped buses. Users can also
check their balance and recharge the card directly via the ETM by scanning a QR
code or entering the card number. The
card is priced at Rs 100 and supports recharge amounts from Rs 50 to Rs 2,000.
It is transferable and can be handed over to friends or relatives. In case of
technical issues, commuters can apply for a replacement, which will be issued
within two days. KSRTC is preparing to implement a Passenger Information System
(PIS), designed to provide real-time data on bus running status, schedules, and
delays. A mobile app will offer live tracking, while major bus stations will be
fitted with display screens.
The system is ready and will be launched following the
formal announcement by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in mid-May.
