Damen continues to tie up with Indian yards as Indian government seeks
to boost shipping sector.
India’s strategy to boost ship construction and become one of the
world’s top ten builders by 2030 have been boosted by another deal with Damen.
Damen Shipyards Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
with India’s Square Port Shipyard to develop its facility, enabling
construction of a range of Damen-designed vessels for the local and regional
markets. The shipyard is located about 250 km south of Mumbai.
The MoU comes soon after Damen signed a similar tie-up with Indian
builder Yeoman Marine to build Damen tugs at the company’s shipyard in
Ratnagiri. And in April last year, Damen entered an agreement to build electric
tugs at Goa Shipyard Ltd.
Dingeman van Worden, Damen’s regional sales director Asia, said: “A
physical presence in one of the world’s fastest growing economies is critical
for Damen Shipyards. The availability of good infrastructure and economic
labour costs will further strengthen our competitive edge in the global market.
This partnership with Square Port Shipyard will enable us to bring our
shipbuilding culture with its unique combination of quality and competitive
prices to India’s maritime sector.”
Earlier this year, the Indian Government announced plans for a
Maritime Development Fund (MDF) to generate long term funding for the country’s
shipping sector. The MDF, funded with the rupee equivalent of close to $2.93bn,
will be financed 49% by the Government with the balance from shipping interests
and private investors.
India has set itself the target of ranking as one of the world’s top
five shipbuilders by mid-century.
