STUDENTS' CORNER -8

We stopped last week pointing out that discipline means conformity to the rules and regulations of the institution where one finds himself employed.  Henri Fayol said that no enterprise can survive without discipline.

It is not that discipline begins and ends with the employees of an institution.  Fayol emphasizes discipline at all levels of the organization. The sense of discipline an employee derives from the institution does not come from the frame work of rules and regulations alone; much more than that, he realizes inwardly the significance of discipline if the employer himself is highly disciplined.  In other words, the discipline flows downwards. A disciplined employer is an open statement of success in business by his very discipline. In such a context, an employee begins to learn discipline and not just tolerate it for the sake of living.

And the respect for the employer on account of his discipline matures into very reverence if the employer has necessary skill and worth to lead the organization. Worth can be both rich experience as well as educational qualification. Experience includes both the experience gained through the family business and the experience gained individually having started one’s own enterprise. The essence of experience of an employer lies in spotting out the talented and the loyal and fair distribution of rewards and punishment in the organization.  An erring employee is a universal phenomenon; every organization will have someone who does not obey the rules and regulations of the institution and tackling such employees in a tactful manner is a subtle streak of management.

A perceptive management will have clear and fair agreements with its employees; the agreement is so clear that an employee knows without any doubt what reward he will get for his loyalty and when; at the same time, he also knows what punishment he will get for which fault. The reward and punishment code is unambiguously clear and the employee is convinced that there is a good proportion between the merit and monetary benefit and between the violation of any regulation and consequent penalty. The judiciousness behind the frame work of reward and punishment testifies to the rich experience and expertise of the management, the employer.

In an organization which has disciplined leaders, employers, the cultivation of discipline among the employees will not be a very big issue.  The very presence of such disciplined heads motivates the employees to work sincerely which actually increases the efficiency of the employees and in turn, this increases the productivity of the organization. Therefore, Henri Fayol is correct in his wise statement that without discipline no enterprise can survive.
